I was an awkward teenager when Farrah Fawcett's red, one-piece swimsuit poster created a frenzy in 1976. I wanted a copy so badly that I actually stayed home "sick" so that I would be the 99th caller on the radio station and win it.
For you see, I was in love with a boy named B. Butz, and I needed Farrah's help. In addition to acne, hair that wouldn't curl, and a not-so-well-endowed body, I had shiny silver bands wrapped around two of my top front teeth thanks to a collision with a toilet seat (think "Mean Girls").
To this day, I look at Farrah's sunshiny face and smile. For that particular photo shoot, she did her own makeup and hair, wore her own swimsuit, and sat in front of a friend's blanket at her own home. Although the other 12 million people who purchased that poster may have had different reasons for doing so, this poster reminds me of something very important: When you are just being your own self, your natural beauty shines through--acne, silver teeth, and all.
In those days, I didn't truly appreciate the fact that God made only one me, and I should embrace that fact! It's a pretty cool thing to think about. (-:
