Give Them Something to Talk About

Updated: Oct 26

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been busy--so busy, in fact, that all the things I’m really interested in doing are packed away in closets or on lists to do “one day when I have more time.”

The problem is, time keeps ticking into the future, and I seem to be walking in the wrong direction on a non-stop conveyor belt, moving farther away from that “one day when I have more time.”

Legitimate hobbies often take a backseat to unaccounted time spent on electronic devices gaming, watching videos, or using social media platforms for passive leisure.

Meanwhile, an active pastime can actually add time to the day. By carving out time for a hobby, one must use time more efficiently to get everything else done, too.

This type of active leisure promotes a sense of happiness and accomplishment. It can also:

a) Help people deal with stress, providing a positive distraction

b) Build self-esteem and add rich layers to a person

c) Help develop social connections with people who share similar interests

d) Give people something to talk about

(My six months of sky diving have given me years of stories to tell.)

e) Spread sunshine to others

I challenge you to embrace a hobby, and please, I’d love to hear from you and share your victories on a future Sunshine video.

Here are several I’ve recently received:

1. LEGO Stop Motion of Star Wars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WMiFngs01Q

2. Woodworking and fostering kittens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DtdX3kC8bU

5. Time-lapse photography and painting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s38F7xQ5MSA

8. Letter writing/volunteering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH-y6LP0R3k
